A senior executive from AstraZeneca, Britain’s second-largest drugmaker, told Reuters that his company was just granted protection from all legal action if the company’s vaccine led to damaging side effects. The protection is granted by the countries lining up for the supplies.
With 25 companies testing their vaccine candidates on humans and getting ready to immunise hundred millions of people once the products are shown to work, the question of who pays for any claims for damages in case of side effects has been a tricky point in supply negotiations.
“In the contracts we have in place, we are asking for indemnification. For most countries it is acceptable to take that risk on their shoulders because it is in their national interest,” he said, adding that Astra and regulators were making safety and tolerability a top priority.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already has a law called the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act, which provides immunity to vaccine companies if something goes wrong.
Considering the rush in providing a vaccine, many experts have cast doubts on the safety of the vaccines and now, millions of people who may develop side effects will have no recourse against the manufacturers.
The cost of the vaccine has also not been addressed. It’s unclear if citizens would have to pay for the vaccine…which has also been too controversial coming.
Last month US Billionaire Bill Gates had to refute claims he was part of a ‘conspiracy’ using the coronavirus as a tool for mass vaccination of the world population.
There also has been a great controversy between proponents of a cheap available treatment for the virus in already available hydroxychloroquine, zinc and Zithromax vs Big Pharma pushing for this vaccine. Again last month US Doctors who made a passioned address about the effectiveness of this treatment faced a lot of backlash from Big Pharma and mainstream media.
When it finally rolls out, it is expected several countries and probably work places would demand a vaccination certificate. For christians, the anti-vaccine camp, the choices are slimming down and fast.
