The Police have revised the number of all those killed in today’s knife attack in France’s Nice city, to three people, including a woman who was beheaded by the attacker.
The knife-wielding attacker was shouting “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is Great) when he carried out the attacks and even after being detained by the police.
Two of those who died were attacked inside the church, the elderly woman and a man who was found with his throat cut, reports said. One of the people killed inside the church was believed to be the church warden
A woman who had managed to flee to a nearby cafe was stabbed several times and died later.
It later emerged that a witness had managed to raise the alarm with a special protection system set up by the city.
Nice’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, who described the attack as terrorism, said on Twitter it had happened in or near Notre Dame church, the largest in the city.
“The suspected knife attacker was shot by police while being detained, he is on his way to hospital, he is alive,” Estrosi told reporters.
“Enough is enough,” Estrosi said. “It’s time now for France to exonerate itself from the laws of peace in order to definitively wipe out Islamo-fascism from our territory.”
This is the second such attack within a month. A teacher was beheaded in France for sharing cartoons in class that were offensive to Muslims.
Following the first attack France president Emmanuel Macron made comments that were in support of the teacher, freedom of speech and legislation targeting Islamic terrorism. His comments were not well received from many Muslim nations with a call for boycott of France products and companies trending for the last week.
It is unclear if this attack is related to the previous attack or its in response to the comments by the president and the ongoing boycott.
