Memory Text: “And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness.” Lev.16:21
Our study will show that Aaron represents Christ and the goat represents Satan. In this perfect bridge between the Old and New Testaments we appreciate the Protestant proverb: “The Old Testament is the New Testament contained; and the New Testament is the Old Testament explained.” By this principle a foundation must first be laid showing the contrast between “who is on the LORD’S side” vs. who stands with “the devil and his angels.” Ex.32:26; Matt.25:41.
FOUNDATIONAL DOCTRINE: THE BASIS FOR OUR STUDY
There is a legal basis on which our salvation depends. And this legal platform is designed not only to deliver every man, woman and child who has ever lived but also to address the degrees of punishment for the evil that has taken place: even the very day when Satan and his demons will suffer for their sins in “the lake of fire” as the LORD cleanses the Earth of every trace of sin.
But to those who “stand fast” for “the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began,” the LORD declares to you and to me, if we “faint not,” that Satan, demons, and unrepentant men will become “ashes under the soles of your feet” (Ti.1:1,2; Mal.4:1-3).
To the wicked mind, GOD is unjust. But to the innocent victims of godless demons and men, they sing His praises for their deliverance and await the rewards for the faithful: the rewards of peace, tranquility and universal love that will thrive unhindered throughout eternity. It will be known that GOD’S mercy is found in every aspect of life because GOD’S gift of eternal life is at stake. And after all is said and done, everyone, “good and bad” will bow before the verse, “God is love.” I Jn.4:8. The prophecy of “the LORD” is clear: “As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” Rom.14:11.
The Bible gives clear explanation how the LORD even ordained the devil’s time in “the lake of fire” in accordance with the number and severity of his sins, with the greatest being the vicious murder of his own Creator: “the Son of God.” But Satan and his demons are unyielding “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” the “souls of men” (Jn.10:10; Rev.18:13). Theirs is a bloodlust that will never be quenched until they burn to death in hell. And thus, after the saints examine the history of sin during the millennial judgment in heaven (Jn.14:2) using the Holy Bible as the standard of judgment (Jn.12:48: hence the great need for the KJV), upon their return, “the wicked” among men, the “evil doers” of this world will share the same fate as Satan: death by fire.
This recompense GOD ordained against the evils of this world will be their lot, and GOD’S “vengeance” against “the wickedness of the wicked” (Eze.18:20) will cast them all into the fiery magma that comes up from below and the fire that comes down from above; thus, answering the prayerful plea of David: “Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end.” Ps.7:9. This fire will swallow up all of man’s weapons of war, industry, and all that has deformed the majesty of life and creation. Again, the prophecy of “the LORD” is clear on the fate of evil’s progenitors: “And they [“the saints”] shall go forth, and look upon the carcases [what’s left] of the men that have transgressed against me [for violating the Moral Law that preserves the security and joy of life]: for their worm shall not die [amidst their ashes], neither shall their fire be quenched [the punishment not prevented]; and they [the unrepentant among angels and men] shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.” Isa.66:24.
Jesus gave several examples of the danger of men sharing Satan’s fate. While GOD is stern with the sins that threaten the existence of life, (the life He created to experience eternal peace and joy), He is “a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth,” “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” Ps.86:15; II Pet.3:9.
An important foundation for us who believe Jesus Christ as “the Son of God,” and how “he shall save his people from their sins,” the key words here are, “his people.” This refers to “everyone whom his spirit made willing” “to love God and keep his commandments.” Ex.35:21; I Jn.5:2. Jesus elaborated on this when He prayed: “I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.” Jn.17:9. And to everyone claiming the Christian faith and who take to heart the sacred warmth of the Saviour’s words, “If ye love me, keep my commandments,” they agree with John when he said: “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” But here we are, nearing 2000 years after the Cross, and Satan and his pawns of demons and men make them out to be anathema. Jn.14:15 I Jn.5:3.
But to those who cherish “the word of the LORD” these are the ones who sorrow for their sins and the sins of others, even those “that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done” (Eze.9:4), knowing full well their own frailty amongst the surrounding wickedness (Ps.51:5). In deep contrition their hearts desire the virtues of a clear moral conscience and proclaim before the world as did Paul, “Who shall save me from this body of death?” Here is where the Bible gives us great comfort, for it is GOD “Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies.” Ps.103:4.
The sacrifice of “the Lord, Jesus Christ” wasn’t only for those who will be saved from their sins. GOD made provision for all men to be saved as it is written: “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” I Jn.2:2. If only all men felt in their hearts the way the faithful Christian does, they would feel the superlative peace and joy while living in a sinful world. Jesus promised this comfort: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Jn.14:27. This is because when “the Spirit of the LORD” dwells in their hearts they count their repentance from all known sin to be a great honor through GOD’S “free gift” of the righteous life of Jesus Christ.
With this revelation a great awakening takes place. They have “tasted that the Lord is gracious” and “the joy of the LORD” fills their hearts. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.” II Cor.5:17; 4:16.
Here is where an invaluable principle of salvation comes into play. While our Premier Father and Mother, Adam and Eve were born with sinless natures, but through Satan’s maniacal scheme led them to deliberately transgress the Sacred Laws that preserve life, we were not born with a sinless nature but a sinful nature. We gave no consent to be born with a self-destructive nature and essentially “evil” disposition (Matt.7:11); easily given over to the temptations of devils against our fallen flesh. Christ was clear on this fact when He said, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Matt.19:10. In response the repentant heart prays: “O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.” Ps.74:21.
This is where the hidden influence of the Holy Spirit comes into play. The power of GOD through the Presence of the Holy Ghost draws from men’s hearts the desire for good and a disdain for evil. We know this from the first miracle of GOD when the LORD said to Satan after he assaulted our First Parents’ vulnerability: “I will put enmity between thee [Satan] and the woman [Eve], and between thy seed [your dupes among men] and her seed [“they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness” (Matt.5:6)]; it shall bruise thy head [“to ashes upon the earth” (Eze.28:18)], and thou shalt bruise his heel” [“Jesus Christ and him crucified” (I Cor.2:2)]. Gen.3:15.
Satan’s powers of temptation had to be met with GOD’S power through the Holy Spirit to offset the forces of temptation. And throughout time the battlefield between the devils temptations and the “still small voice” of Christ tugging our human aspirations for a virtuous life has determined the history that we all understand: with the many stories and legends of heroism, and also the stories of the most heinous, ungodly character.
Now that GOD balanced the scales to restore our freedom to choose life over death comes the value man places on heaven’s gift granted to every man. Whichever course one chooses for life determines the character of the man. Some choose a virtuous life: always desiring to bless others and to see them safe and happy, while others could care less for anyone or anything but themselves. This class adamantly ignore the Voice of the Holy Spirit Who urges their conscience to live a life of virtue. But Satan has so trained them to enjoy the sins of life that they cannot be reasoned with. They feel no pity nor remorse or fear. Anyone or anything that hinders their insatiable lust for power and gain they disregard as having no value. “So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.” Prov.1:19.
But “he that hath ears to hear” will give heed to the “still small voice” quietly tugging their heartstrings saying, “Follow me.” They will be drawn to “the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” And they will cry out in their hearts: “How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” Their hearts cherish more than “gold, silver, and brass” the promise: “Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” Jer.31:3. “The Spirit of the LORD” tugs the hearts of every man. And only at “the resurrection of damnation” will “the wicked” realize what they have turned their backs on.
So as the world advances the authority of sin, and men whose “mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be,” the saints are to be tested in one last fiery trial. Not only for their depth of repentance from all known sin, which includes repenting of their secret sins they would carry out if given a chance (Jer.3:5), but also to test their strength of resolve to stand in hunger and privation in the days leading up to the 2nd Advent of the LORD Jesus Christ Who shall “deliver the captives.” “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.” “Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.” “And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” Matt.16:27; Ps.50:3; Isa.25:9.
THE CORE LESSON OF OUR STUDY
It is this moment of human history when Christ returns for “his saints” that Satan abhors, despises, and kicks against! His unceasing rage abounds to fight against this day! It is important to note that the reason Satan leads all men into sin is simply because Satan’s survival is completely dependent on causing every man, woman, and child to die. He even sacrificed his own Creator so he can live his life in the insatiable bloodlust of sin. This is the spirit he imbues into the hearts of men. And only the Presence of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Ghost stays his hand.
The death of every man, woman, and child throughout Earth’s 6000 year history was essential for the devil’s own survival. It’s like the deplorable saying, “If I can’t live, nobody will.” We see this criminal deed all the time in our society. But even though “the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,” “having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time,” Satan’s last work is to get you, me and those we care for and love to hold on to our sins and never repent of them, and thus suffer the punishment for our own sins.
This is a most important doctrine to understand in the battleground over the souls of men. In the legal framework of our salvation, if Satan can get the sinner to “perish” in their own sins then he does not have to bear the punishment for them. This is the great lesson of “the scapegoat” of Leviticus 16. When Christ, as our “high priest” takes the sins of the repentant and places them on the head of the goat (Satan), these are the sins that Satan must bear the punishment of, being “the root” of every sin (Mal.4:1). We, who adore “the truth of Christ” and rejoice for the gift of repentance (Rom.2:4) we take great solace knowing that the sinner can legally give his sins to Christ by faith believing that He willingly took them all along with His sinful flesh (not nature) to the grave, and left them there!
But justice demands that Jesus, being innocent of sin, does not deserve the punishment of sin. He is not responsible for the abuse of GOD’S gift of freewill. Therefore, the sins of “his saints” must be cast upon the source of all sin: “the devil…He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.” Jn.8:44. Every sin that is commited by “the saints” will pass from Christ to Satan. So, even though “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” every child of Adam who were given no choice to be born condemned in sin, through Christ have been legally exonerated from sin (Rom.3:23).
Satan as the father of sin, suffering and death must be exposed as the sole culprit behind every crime and evil deed. It extends back to the days of Cain with the LORD’S call to “Repent.” Cain refused. And so have the churches who have been given great light through the Holy Bible. Every unrepentant soul in the church will find themselves standing with most of the human race who openly have no faith in “Jesus Christ and him crucified.” Christ’s warning to every Christian is clear:
“Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able,” “for many be called, but few chosen.” Lu.13:23,24; Matt.20:16.
Satan, as the father of sin, and the cause for all the death and woe in this world, he must bear the punishment for all the sins he has committed and led both angels and men to commit. But when it comes to the sins of men who do not confess and forsake their sins, he does not have to bear the punishment for those sins. The Scripture is clear:
“The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.” “For every man shall bear his own burden…Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap.” Eze.18:4; Gal.6:5,7.
This principle of individual responsibility is why Paul included the demons in the millennial judgment of the saints: “Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?” I Cor.6:2,3. And all will be judged by the Great Standard of Government that preserves the perpetuation of life: “The Word of God” and “the ten commandments.” Rev.19:13; Ex.34:28.
The Sacred Law is the key to eternity! It not only condemns the lawless, but it also delivers the faithfully obedient. This is why the entire theme of human history has been a constant repetition of GOD’S call: “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” Acts 3:19.
In summation, if Satan can get you or me to remain unrepentant “in our transgressions and our sins,” he spares himself while we bear the punishment for the sins he tempted us to commit. It is a life and death struggle for our salvation, but also for the devil himself!
ENTER: JESUS CHRIST
Our LORD, Saviour, and KING has made a way of escape! He carried the burden of sin to the grave and left it there for “they that believe on him.” He Alone took the brunt of the wrath of GOD against sin that we not have to! And because Satan is the father of sin, and the source for all suffering and death, Jesus has the authority to place the responsibility of all sin on the head of Satan. Christ said it plainly: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” Matt.28:18. And thus is fulfilled the prophecy of the LORD to the devil back in the beginning: “It shall bruise thy head.” But those of us who “believe on the name of the Son of God” “it is the power of GOD unto salvation.” I Jn.5:13; Rom.1:16.
“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Rev.12:10.
