Kilifi County Deputy Governor may have created another Coronavirus hotspot in Kenya’s Coast region, after getting back from a trip to Germany and refusing to self quarantine, instead went ahead to mingle with several people who are being traced by authorities.
Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe confirmed Sunday evening that Kilifi County Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi has tested positive for coronavirus.
According to investigations, Saburi got back in the country on 6th of March, after a long trip to Germany that started sometime mid of February. At the time of his arrival, Kenya was already in high alert over the situation and he should have self quarantined.
Instead, the following day he attended a meeting, the first of several that investigators have confirmed. He attended several meetings with County government officials, several weddings and funerals.
CS Kagew has confirmed that the Deputy Governor would be charged in court for violating a government directive as regards to the coronavirus pandemic.
Authorities are tracing all persons who came into close contact with Saburi. All the staff of the hotel he held meetings at, and the county government staff he came in contact with will be quarantined.
