Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

The Holy Spirit works many ways in our lives to bring us close to Jesus. Without this work the plan of salvation would be half complete. After the resurrection Jesus went back to Heaven and He promised to send the Holy Spirit to His people.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

In this study we’ve summarized the working of the Holy into 7 Ways according to Human understanding because God’s ways cannot be fathom by finite minds. Please also note this is not intending to describe the nature of the Holy Spirit but simply describing the work He does according to the Bible.

1) He convicts us of sin: You feel guilty when you do something wrong and this feeling will intensify until you seek forgiveness from God. This work is done by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit convicts sin and shows your need of a Savior.

The office of the Holy Spirit is distinctly specified in the words of Christ: “When He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”John 16:8. It is the Holy Spirit thatconvicts of sin. If the sinner responds to the quickening influence of the Spirit, he will be brought to repentance and aroused to the importance of obeying the divine requirements. AA 52.2

To the repentant sinner, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, the Holy Spirit reveals the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.“He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you,” Christ said. “He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”John 16:14; 14:26. AA 52.3

2) The Holy Spirit Is our Comforter: When we need strength to stand firm in our battles against evil, it is the Holy Spirit that gives us this strength to do what’s right. He comforts the heart with Jesus words and assures the believer of the certainty of His promises. It is the Holy Spirit that reminds you of Jesus words: “John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

“When the Comforter is come,” He said, “whom I will send unto you fromthe Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me: and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with Me from the beginning.”John 15:26, 27. AA 22.1

3) He is the one that creates a new heart in a person. When King David was praying “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalms 51:10” He was calling forth the work of the Holy Spirit. He creates a clean heart and renew the spirit to make a person a new creature in Christ Jesus. “2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

David had prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” And through Ezekiel the promise had been given, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes.” Isaiah 64:6; Psalm 51:10; Ezekiel 36:26, 27. DA 174.1

4) The Holy Spirit gives understanding to God’s Holy Word.
Without the Spirit of God man cannot understand the Holy Scriptures. It has to be interpreted by its own author. It was the Holy Spirit that inspired the servants of God to write the Bible. “2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Man should approach the Bible with prayers before they can understand it. The Spirit of God enlightening the mind will grant understanding to the reader. “James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

5) The Holy Spirit gives Hope for the future: When all hope is lost and men seem to see only darkness ahead, the Holy Spirit enlightens the mind and encourages the person to walk by faith and not by sight. The world filled with discouragements and disappointments leads many to think about ending their lives but if they would listen to the still small voice echoing in their minds telling them: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11” they would find hope when all seem lost. The Holy Spirit strengthens one’s faith and encourages Him to trust in God’s promises. He is still saying to you “Isaiah 26:4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:”

6) The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered: We do not even know our greatest needs and do not know how to pray but the Holy Spirit helps us when we pray. “Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” The Holy Spirit does a lot in our lives and His intercession with groanings on our behalf is sent to where our Redeemer is, Heaven.

7) The Holy Spirit seals us for redemption: “Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” The work of the Holy Spirit is to convince the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. The world can only be warned by seeing those who believe the truth sanctified through the truth, acting upon high and holy principles, showing in a high, elevated sense, the line of demarcation between those who keep the commandments of God and whose who trample them under their feet. The sanctification of the Spirit signalizes the difference between those who have the seal of God and those who keep a spurious rest day. 7BC 980.8

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
