Doctors in the Netherlands can now sedate ‘Agitated’ dementia patients before using lethal substance to end their life
The Netherlands has now authorized physicians to sedate dementia patients without any special approval before they end their life. Dementia patients deemed to be “agitated” will be sedated.
The policy change comes after the review committee for cases of euthanasia updated its policies for patients diagnosed with dementia or a similar health condition, The Guardian reports. The amended policies state that for dementia patients “it is not necessary for the doctor to agree with the patient the time or manner in which euthanasia will be given.”
Euthanasia(which simply means KILLING someone medically) is legal in the Netherlands and doctors will not seek permission from dementia patients before sedating them and ending their lives.
According to report a 74-year patient once wrote “I want to be able to decide (when to die) while still in my senses and when I think the time is right.” but this fundamental right was denied.
