A Locust plague that at the beginning of the year was ravaging parts of East Africa is now in Europe with several mayors in the regions affected declaring a state of natural disaster.

The millions of insects, reminiscent of the biblical plague that fell upon ancient Egypt, have covered large swatches of land in the island’s agricultural regions, destroying crops and plantations.

The world bank has the invasion of the locusts the worst the regions have faced in at least 70 years, similar to East Africa which was also the worst in at least 50 years.

The epicentre is formed by the municipalities of Orani, Ottana and Bolotana in the Tirso valley, with insects having arrived from the Middle East and Africa, where 23 countries have experienced similar problems.

Ambrogio Guiso, the President of Reclamation Consortium of central Sardinia said roughly 13 thousand hectares of land had been affected.
